DESCRIPTION:Toilet training can feel like a big milestone\, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. \n\nJoin Carmen Albernas\, M.A.\, BCBA\, and Luisa Hernandez Medellin\, Psy.D.\, PMH-C\, in collaboration with the Advocacy Network and KLA Schools of Aventura\, for an in-person toilet training workshop focused on practical\, evidence-based strategies to help children with special needs build independence at their own pace.\n\n  \nKey Topics:\n\nThe Preparation Phase: Choosing an approach that fits your family dynamic\, readiness checklists\, and essential tools\nSetting the Stage: Selecting reinforcers\, hydration plans\, and managing expectations\nThe Training Phase: A step-by-step guide on how to start and what to do when accidents happen\nLong-Term Success: Increasing independence from day one\, troubleshooting past challenges\, and generalizing skills across new places\n\nDr. Hernandez Medellin will also be available to offer insights from a neuropsychological perspective. \n  \nDetails:\n\nDate: April 18\, 2026\nTime: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. – Doors will open at 9:45 a.m.\nLocation: KLA Schools of Aventura: 20301 Biscayne Blvd.\, Aventura\, FL 33180\nCoffee and light refreshments will be provided.\nChild care will not be provided\, however if two parents attend\, the supervising parent can spend time with their child at the playground or in the piazza while the workshop is ongoing.\n\n  \nPresenters:\nCarmen Albernas M.A.\, BCBA\nBehavior Analyst | Community Partnerships\nKyo Autism Therapy \nCarmen Albernas is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with extensive experience in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) since 2018. She holds a Master’s degree in Professional Behavior Analysis and a Bachelor’s in Sociology\, and has worked across a range of clinical settings\, including early intervention programs\, in-home services\, and multidisciplinary care environments. Carmen has supported individuals with autism\, ADHD\, and other developmental disabilities across the lifespan\, with a strong emphasis on early intervention. Her clinical work includes comprehensive assessments (e.g.\, VB-MAPP\, ABLLS\, AFLS\, Vineland-3)\, development of individualized\, data-driven treatment plans\, and supervision and training of behavior technicians. She is experienced in addressing complex behavioral presentations\, including communication delays\, adaptive skill deficits\, and severe challenging behaviors. In addition to her clinical expertise\, Carmen brings a systems-level perspective to care. She prioritizes caregiver training\, interdisciplinary collaboration\, and socially valid outcomes that meaningfully impact family life. Her approach is grounded in evidence-based practice\, with a focus on efficient\, high-quality intervention that promotes independence\, generalization\, and long-term success. \nLuisa Hernandez Medellin\, PSY.D.\, PMH-C\nBilingual Pediatric Neuropsychologist; PSYPACT-authorized\nNESCA Miami/Coral Gables\, Florida Office \nAs a bilingual pediatric neuropsychologist\, Dr. Hernandez Medellin conducts comprehensive and culturally sensitive neurodevelopmental and neuropsychological assessments\, comprehensive diagnostic evaluations\, and effective care plans\, providing appropriate recommendations for the client’s school\, home\, and the community. She specializes in the identification and assessment of neurodevelopmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorders\, ADHD\, developmental and learning disorders\, and their co-occurrence with anxiety and mood disorders. She also works with children and young adults with acquired brain injuries\, epilepsy\, brain tumors\, strokes\, general medical conditions\, and genetic disorders affecting the nervous system. She is a native Spanish-speaker\, passionate about serving the eclectic and vibrant South Florida community\, as well as international patients looking for high-quality and compassionate care. \nDr. Hernandez Medellin attended the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital: Predoctoral Internship and Postdoctoral Residency.
